Every Sperm Is Special, Genome Sequencing Shows PDF Print E-mail
International News
Results of the first study to sequence the genomes of individual sperm cells obtained from one person have revealed significant genetic differences between them, confirming the belief that each sperm is unique. It is hoped the technique could be applied in fertility treatments to identify genetic mutations that may occur in the recombination process.

Single Embryo Transfer Reduces the Risk of Perinatal Mortality in IVF PDF Print E-mail
International News
Istanbul, 4 July 2012: A policy of single embryo transfer (SET) reduces the risk of perinatal mortality in infants born as a result of IVF and ICSI. The conclusion emerged from an analysis of more than 50,000 births recorded in the Australian and New Zealand Assisted Reproduction Technology Database between 2004 and 2008, where the introduction of an SET policy has been associated with a reduction in overall perinatal mortality for IVF and ICSI babies.

Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis for Cancer Risk During IVF Is Feasible, Study Indicates PDF Print E-mail
International News
It is now scientifically feasible to use preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) during IVF to screen embryos for genes associated with high cancer risk, scientists say.

European researchers presented the results of a major study - as yet the largest in this area of research - at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology's annual meeting in Istanbul, Turkey. They conclude that the technique can be used reliably so that men and women who carry cancer-causing mutations in their BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes do not pass them on to their children. Female carriers of a mutation in either gene have a 60 to 80 percent chance of developing breast cancer over their lifetimes, and a risk of 30 to 60 percent (BRCA1) or five to 20 percent (BRCA2) for ovarian cancer

The Handmade Cloned Sheep Produced in China PDF Print E-mail
International News
Beijing: Chinese scientists in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region have produced the transgenic sheep with a simplified technique of Handmade Cloning.

The project, completed March 26, started more than two years ago. Apart from the general inefficiency of cloning where only a small fraction of the reconstructed embryos develop into healthy offspring, the cloners had to overcome additional difficulties including the special climate and compromised laboratory environment with very basic instruments.
