The 4th Royan International Summer School on Developmental Biology and Stem Cells for Regenerative Medicine was held on August 10th to 15th, 2013 at Royan Institute. The main purposes of this summer school included teaching developmental biology and stem cells, introducing international new scientific topics and techniques, and providing a friendly scientific environment for free discussions among all biology and medicine students attended.

More than 270 undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students made use of the scientific sessions in which the following topics were taught and discussed: Generation of Transgenic Animals, Pancreas stem cell and regeneration, Animal cloning and transgenesis: methods and applications, Liver and Tissue Engineering, Germ Cells, Cord Blood Bank, Stem cell plasticity, Skeletal muscle development and disorders, Biology of hematopoietic stem cells, Muscle stem cells, Designing and ethical issues in stem cell-based clinical trials, Pancreas and thymus development, Epidermal stem cell and gene therapy, Gene transfer technologies and gene therapy, Hematological diseases and stem cell gene therapy, Environmental reprogramming of thymic epithelial cells, Safety of retroviral stem cell gene therapy, Lineage potential and plasticity of epithelial stem/progenitor cells, Cell therapy for diabetes, and Tracking hematopoietic stem cell dynamics by retroviral tagging.

This six-day theoretical-practical summer school was provided in Persian language on first day and English on the next five days. A number of Royan researchers and three international professors from UK, Italy and Austria proceeded the scientific debates.

Each day the lectures were succeeded by the following workshops from 14:00 to 17:00; Flowcytometery, Human Artificial Chromosomes and iPS cells for the development of novel therapeutic strategies for muscle disorders and Intramuscular cell transplantation, Isolation of embryonic pancreas and thymus from mouse embryo, Kidney capsule transplantation, and Tissue Engineering. Five another practical workshops were carried out on the whole last day including: Maintenance conditions of mouse in animal laboratory and Setting of natural mating, Inducing superovulation, Opening the abdominal cavity and locating female reproductive organs and Collecting oocytes, Collecting sperm and capacitating, In vitro Fertilization, Collecting embryos, Vasectomy, Embryo transfer, Cryopreservation of oocytes.

This program was organized by Dr S Kiani as scientific manager, L Daliri and R Moghiminasr as the executive secretaries and their colleagues in Royan Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Technology.
